Edible oils and greases are essential for human and animal nutrition. They provide an energy and nutritional base, serving as a source of essential fatty acids like Omega-3 and Omega-6, and are vital for the absorption of vitamins necessary for proper bodily function. They also contribute essential organoleptic properties to foods.
Oils and fats can be differentiated into two main groups based on their origin:
Animal fats in which meat and fish are found.
Grasas animales en las que se encuentran las cárnicas y las de pescado.
The most common oils worldwide include:
> Palm Oil
> Soybean Oil
> Rapeseed/Canola Oil
> Sunflower oil
These oils are widely consumed in some regions of the world:
> Corn Oil
> Coconut Oil
> Peanut oil
> Olive Oil
Less common oils, but with specific properties:
> Shea butter
> Avocado oil
> Rice bran oil
> Castor oil
> Technical oils of castor, jatropha, etc.
> Marine oils
Include those obtained from the primary extraction of other fruits and plants:
> Palm kernel oil
> Olive pomace oil
> Grape seed oil
> Coconut oil
Oils and greases can be used as edible oils in salads, sauces, and frying, as well as in the production of processed foods of all kinds, being highly valued as ingredients for child nutrition.
They can also be used for technical applications in the formulation of pharmaceuticals, cosmetic solutions, or oleo-chemical production.
In recent years, non-edible oils and fats have been utilized as raw materials for the production of biofuels, renewable diesel (HVO), and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
To meet the needs of different uses and markets, oils and/or fats must be refined to remove undesirable products, aiming to achieve more stable oils and fats, extend their shelf life, and improve their organoleptic properties.
During each stage of the refining process, substances that may affect the quality and stability of the oil and/or fat are removed.
During the decolorization or bleaching process, contact with bleaching earths like Sepigel® effectively eliminates pro-oxidative elements such as chlorophyll and metals, pigments, phospholipids, soaps, and peroxides.
The role of bleaching earths is significant in mitigating the formation of 3-MCPD and glycerol esters, as well as in removing other undesirable substances like mycotoxins, PAHs, or pesticides.
The Sepigel® range is adapted to meet the requirements of each type of oil and fat. Our R&D team designs customized products to meet the specific needs of the customer’s oil or fat and develops new solutions to address market demands.
The bleaching earths are obtained from a meticulous selection of mineral sources. The mineral is subsequently processed in our plants to achieve products with optimal properties that allow for maximum adsorption and efficient filtrability, both in filtration speed and lower oil retention in the cake.
A natural bleaching earth, especially recommended for palm oil, sunflower oil, or tallow, among others. It is characterized by a lower incidence of 3-MCPD, GE, and AGL generation.
An activated bleaching clay that, due to its versatility, is recommended for bleaching any type of oil and animal fat with moderate difficulty.
A highly activated bleaching clay with a large specific surface area and number of acid centers that allows for efficient and selective adsorption of undesirable compounds. Particularly recommended for oils with a high content of chlorophyll and difficult-to-remove colored compounds.
Sepigel®, a wide range of products in constant development offering optimal solutions for different markets and applications related to the purification, refining and bleaching of oils and fats.
